Soda Blasting, What's that??

5/26/2022 (Permalink)

I don't know about you, but the first thing I think about when someone says 'soda blasting' is a bunch of kids running around shaking up cans of soda and spraying them at each other. 3 Tips to Prevent Winter Storm Damage

12/10/2021 (Permalink)

Properly insulating pipes before temperatures drop can save you a lot of hassle

Three Tips That Can Help You

If you live somewhere with subzero temperatures during winter, you have probably heard about the importance of winterization. In a nutshell, this is the process of preparing your home for the blizzard conditions you can expect to experience between December and February. For these months, homeowners take the time to winterize homes because it can prevent significant damage. You, too, can protect your home in Henrietta, NY before the next winter storm. Here are three tips to help:

1. Look Up
One of the first places to check when winterizing is the roof. How are the tiles or metal? Make sure to keep an eye out for holes or dents, and make repairs as necessary. Gutters are also important. Clear any debris you see to prevent ice dams and water build-up. When it comes to winter problems, roof damage is often a major concern.

2. Look Around
Next, take a look at the siding around the house. Are there any spots you need to repair? Also, do not forget the shutters or windows. If air can somehow get in, seal any leaks and repair or replace any broken or missing parts. In addition to looking around the house itself, look around the yard as well. Do you see any trees that could cause damage if they break? If so, considering trimming them.

3. Look Inside
The roof and surroundings of a home are important considerations, but one of the most important things to think about is inside. Indeed, frozen pipes are a leading cause of homeowners needing the assistance of winter storm damage remediation experts. Properly insulating pipes before temperatures drop can save you a lot of hassle down the road.
Owning a home in a snowy place comes with unique challenges. In order to prevent unnecessary damages the next time you experience a winter storm, take some time to familiarize yourself with the many ways you can winterize your home.

Roof Damage from Storms

12/9/2021 (Permalink)

Severe or even mild thunderstorms can easily cause roof damage, especially if your roof is older than 15-20 years old. These damages can cause water intrusion in your home and if left untreated can cause more serious issues such as mold or wood rot. Some common types of roof damage from storms are:

  • Split seams
  • Broken or cracked tiles
  • Dented or missing shingles
  • Dents on gutters or vents
  • Holes

All of these issues can cause water to leak into your home and you may not even notice! Unless you physically see the water damage, you may not realize that you have any. If you have an attic that you don't always go into, it is possible to have water leaking before seeing it. It is always a good idea to check for roof damage after a severe thunderstorm. A professional roofing contractor can help you with this.

In addition to these common types of damage, there are some rare occurrences of damage that can happen. Rare types of roof damage are:

  • Caving in on itself
  • Tree blowing over onto roof

Unfortunately for these types of rare but extreme damage, there is no way to prevent them from happening. The best thing you can do, is to get your roof replaced if older than 15 years, and to make sure to trim your trees prior to a thunderstorm.

Avoid a Dryer Fire in your Pittsford NY home

12/9/2021 (Permalink)

Do you have a dryer? Of course you do. One of the most needed appliances in our homes can also cause the most damage if not taken care of properly. The fear of a dryer fire is one that is not commonly heard of, however, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and 10 injuries due to clothes dryer fires. Several hundred people a year are also subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer vent setups. The financial costs come to nearly $100,000,000 per year. In some cases faulty appliances are to blame, but many fires can be prevented with proper dryer venting.

Here are some small steps to take to Avoid a Dryer Fire:

1. Dryer's produce large amounts of lint. Be sure to clean the lint trap after EVERY use of the dryer.

2. Dryer Vents should ONLY be made of metal and be short and straight. Bends and curves result in lint buildup increasing the risk of a fire.

3. Do not run the dryer when you are away from home or sleeping.

Protecting your Home from Water Damage

12/9/2021 (Permalink)

Heavy rains in Monroe County have been happening more frequently! Here are some tips to help keep your home safe during this time.

  • Tip #1: Check those gutters! This can be a simple but very effective way to prevent unwanted water from entering your home or business. Gutters that are clogged with debris from overhanging trees, trash, or roofing materials can easily clog the drain and shuffle unwanted water your way.
  • Tip #2: Tarp up any unfinished roofing projects. Going along with our first tip, small openings in the roof of your home and business can quickly become large openings with heavy rain, causing water damage inside your building. Make sure to give your local roofing company a call and get those potential problem areas patched up ASAP.
  • Tip #3: Examine your window glaze and compound. Often times, glazing compounds can shrink during the warmer months, making windows more susceptible to unwanted rain water penetration. Your local contractor can help patch this up for you, ensuring that you are set and ready for even the heaviest of rains! Another helpful tip… make sure you close your windows before going to bed or leaving the home.
  • Tip #4 (the most important!): Should you find yourself in a situation where you do have a water damage emergency, call SERVPRO of East Monroe County. Our staff is prepped and ready to respond and help make your rain disaster, "Like it never even happened."

Common Causes of House Fires in Fairport, New York

12/6/2021 (Permalink)

House fires can be devastating and the road to recovery is long and hard. Educating yourself on the leading causes for house fires and prevention is a step in the right direction to ensure that your family and home are safe.

Electrical Outlets

Many electrical fires in homes or businesses are caused by faulty electrical outlets, old wiring, outdated appliances or electrical cords that are frayed.

-If you live in an older home have an electrician complete an inspection. Standards and codes are constantly being revised and updated to ensure safety.

-Do not overload your circuits.

-Understand the difference between surge protectors and power strips. Both devices allow you to plug in multiple electronics, but only the surge protector will help protect your electronics from a power surge.

Kitchen Fires

The leading cause of kitchen fires is due to unattended cooking. It’s important to be alert to prevent cooking fires.

-Never leave pots or pans unattended on your stove.

-Keeping your stove an oven clean will prevent buildup of food splatter and grease that could later ignite when the stove or oven is turned on for cooking.

-Keep any items that could ignite away from your stove top

-Ensure that you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen in case of emergency.

Dryers

Over time, your dryer vent fills with lint that sneaks by your dryers filter. Fires can occur when the excess lint builds up in the dryer or exhaust duct.

-Clean out the dryer vent regularly.

-Clean the lint filter after EACH load of laundry that is dried.

-Clean underneath and behind your dryer to eliminate any lint that collects

Tips when Cooking with Oil

12/6/2021 (Permalink)

The number one cause of house fires is from cooking. The heat we use to cook our food can be dangerous when we are careless or leave a hot surface unattended. Cooking with oil is especially dangerous due to the volatility of hot oil. Below is a list of best practices for cooking with oil to make sure you and your home stay safe.

Never Leave a Hot Frying Pan Unattended.

A fire can quickly ignite and become uncontrollable within seconds. Leaving the kitchen for even a shot time can be disastrous for your home.

Smoking Oil is Dangerous.

If you are heating up oil and it begins to smoke, this is a warning sign. Immediately turn off the stovetop and wait at least 15 minutes for the surface to cool. If possible, safely move pan from burner and set on an unheated burner or other surface.

Keep a Lid Nearby.

If a fire does happen, place the lid over the pan to suppress the fire. Do not throw water onto the hot oil as the water will instantly boil and set off a burst of hot oil & water that can only spread the fire.

Cooking with oil is a quick way to make all of your favorite foods and recipes. Using caution, you can have a wonderful meal with no worries. Be sure to exercise safety when cooking at all times and hopefully you will never have to worry about cleaning up a fire in your home.

How to Help Prevent Frozen Pipes

11/11/2021 (Permalink)

Living in Western New York, it’s common knowledge that during the winter, freezing temperatures will happen. Depending on the duration and severity of a freeze event, frozen and broken pipes can be a common problem. But there are a few precautions that can help keep your pipes from freezing.

Leave faucets dripping-

Having a trickle of cold water flowing through your pipes will keep water moving. Moving water is more resistant to freezing.

Open Cabinet Doors-

When temperatures are freezing, opening the cabinet doors on sinks such as kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks, or laundry wash tubs will help reduce risk of freezing. This measure is especially important if the sinks are located along an exterior wall. Sometimes there could be a cool breeze finding its way in through the pipes, or a crack in the foundation. Opening the cabinet doors introduces heated air into the cabinet space, and warms the exposed plumbing.

Wrap Your Pipes-

Pipes that are at risk for freezing should be wrapped in heat tape, or pipe insulation. This will help add extra freeze resistance to your pipes.

Keep heat to 55F or higher-

If you plan on leaving your home for a day trip, vacation, or vacating your house for any reason, you should not leave your temperature any lower than 55 degrees F. This temperature provides a base level of warmth to prevent freezing in the home.

If your pipes freeze and break and it causes a water damage, SERVPRO of East Monroe County is here for you 24/7. Call us anytime at (585) 641-0040.

Save Money

11/11/2021 (Permalink)

When you own or operate a small business, you typically don’t have unlimited financial resources to stay afloat. It is critical to manage your expenses so you can control cash outflow from your company. If your business is in a commercial building, your utility bills can make up a large amount of your monthly expenses. Managing and reducing energy consumption is a sure way to lower your bills, and keep more money in your business.

- Insulation Saves Energy

One fairly inexpensive way to reduce energy costs is insulating your property. You can save up to 10% of your energy bill by installing proper insulation and sealing your building. Sealing drafty windows is a great start, as well as adding insulation to exterior walls. Additionally, sealing around plumbing penetrations and correcting leaks in HVAC ducts is helpful.

- Turn Off Lights and Computers

At the end of the business day, have your employees power down their computers, and turn off all lights. Modern laptop computers and LED lighting consume far less electricity than their older counterparts. However, they still use a small amount of energy. Fully shutting off computers and lights can still result in savings in the long run.

- Utilize Smart Building Technology

Modern building controls, including programmable thermostats, are a great way to limit energy consumption. Smart thermostats can help you build a heating and cooling schedule that keeps your employees comfortable during business hours, while cutting back on usage during times that nobody is present. Motion-sensing light switches turn lights on when people are in a room, and automatically turn them off when no motion is detected. This minimizes electrical consumption, and cuts down your electric bill.

- Maintain your HVAC system

Dirty HVAC systems consume more energy to operate than a clean, well-maintained system. Clogged filters, dirty refrigeration coils, and dust buildup in the supply and return ducts all add resistance to airflow. The blowers have to work harder to push air, and consume more power as a result. Changing filters regularly, and scheduling periodic duct cleaning, can save you money in the form of reduced utility bills.

SERVPRO of East Monroe County can address your HVAC cleaning needs. We have the tools and training to keep your HVAC system running cleanly and efficiently, so you can keep a handle on energy consumption expenses in your business.

Wood Flooring Damaged by Water

11/10/2021 (Permalink)

The faster water is removed, the less damage occurs.  Wood flooring expands as it absorbs moisture.  Typically you would notice in wood flooring that it warps or buckles.  If proper drying is not done those floors may need to be removed.  There are two noticeable warping effects on wood floors, cupping and crowning.

Cupping:  this occurs when water is absorbed from the bottom of the wood.  The edges of the wood floor will slightly raise hence the name "cup" in cupping.  This is often fixed with sanding.

Crowning:  this occurs when the top of the wood contains more moisture than the sides and bottom.  This makes wood flooring arch in the middle.  If the bottom of the wood is over-dried this will occur.  You may not be able to sand this out and floors would need to be replaced at this point.

If you have an questions or concerns about your flooring and moisture contact SERVPRO of East Monroe County for any of your water, fire and mold needs.

Mold Remediation for your Rochester Commercial Property

11/10/2021 (Permalink)

Mold starts to form when you have airborne spores contact moisture and food sources. Food Sources can include wood, dirt, and paper. Mold starts with some type of leak from roof, pipes, or flooding and most of the time it won’t even be visible from the outside. Mold is most definitely a threat to the structure and can cause health effects. It is important to be on a lookout for potential mold growth Any place where water is found will most likely develop mold if not taken care of properly. Listed below are common places where mold can grow.

  • Basements
  • Attics
  • Under sinks
  • Crawl spaces
  • Furnaces
  • Kitchens
  • Bathrooms

It is important to keep an eye on these areas as they can obtain moisture and eventually produce mold. If you suspect an area is wet bring in a professional to properly assess the situation. If something like this is ignored it can cause more damage and could become costly.

3 Reasons you should Never Drive through Floodwaters

9/27/2021 (Permalink)

There are many reasons someone might try to drive through the deep, standing waters of a flooded street. Perhaps they are trying to pick up their children from school. Maybe they're trying to get home to see what sort of havoc the storm is wreaking there. No matter how good the reasons to drive through flooded roads in Monroe County may seem, however, the reasons not to drive through floodwaters outweigh them.

Lack of Vision

Deep waters obscure your view of the actual street. If you can't see the pavement, you don't know what you're driving into. There could be any number of hazards below the surface:

• Fallen branches from damaged nearby trees
• Signs or other items that have washed into the street
• Sinkholes where the water has weakened the pavement

Don't risk getting hurt or stuck by something you cannot see.

Damage to Car

Your car is not amphibious. It is an electrical machine, and water and electricity don't mix. It wasn't made to go through water deeper than a couple of inches, and even that is pushing it. On a flooded street, your car may stall or die completely if too much water gets into certain parts of the car.

Danger to You

Floodwater tends to move rapidly and take everything in its path with it. This includes your car and, by proxy, you. Fast-moving water can flip your car, not only causing more damage to the vehicle but also putting your life in danger. Avoiding flooded roads may mean avoiding potentially serious injuries.

Compared with the reasons not to drive on a flooded street, the reasons that tempt you are faulty. Your children are probably safer at the school than they would be in your car, and water mitigation specialists can fix whatever is happening to your home. Follow these travel tips and only drive where you can see the road.

4 Commercial Roof Maintenance Tips

9/27/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial Roof Maintenance Tips

The roof is one of the most important parts of any building. A roof leak can lead to water damage and mold growth. Consider adding these four maintenance tips to your roof maintenance plan to avoid problems with your roof.

1. Have Regular Inspections Done
Schedule a professional roof inspection at least once per year. Inspectors can look for wind damage, leaks or sagging areas so that they can be addressed before they get worse. It is also a good idea to have your roof inspected after a weather event, such as hail or high winds, that could have caused damage. However, avoid walking on the roof yourself. This can lead to roof damage.

2. Repair Leaks Immediately
You should call a professional in Rochester, NY, to repair a roof leak as soon as you become aware of it. If you put repairs off, the ongoing leak could lead to damage to inventory and equipment, electrical damage, a roof collapse or a need for extensive water restoration efforts. The earlier you have repairs done, the less you are likely to pay in repair costs.

3. Keep Your Roof Clean
Debris on your roof can contribute to poor drainage. This may result in standing water that could promote algae growth and lead to deterioration. Periodically clean debris, such as tree limbs and leaves, off your roof and AC units.

4. Clear Snow in the Winter
The weight of accumulated snow on your roof can cause damage or even lead to a roof collapse. It may also contribute to ice dams forming that can lead to leaks. Make removing snow from your roof a regular part of your snow removal plan.
Regular maintenance can help extend the life of your roof and avoid problems, such as a roof leak. The time and money you invest in maintaining your roof now will pay dividends down the road.

Repairing your home after a water loss

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

A flood is probably one of the most damaging things you can experience, either heavy rain or home water system malfunction. When a flood happens, you need to act fast; the longer you wait, the more damages there can be.

Tip 1: Safety First

Staying inside your home after a flood can be dangerous. If you can do it, turn off the fuse connections of your home. But if your home has suffered a severe flood episode, you should wait outside for an expert to come and inspect your home.

Tip 2: Call Your Insurance Company

You should call your insurance company as soon as you have a flood. Depending on the type of flood, they might need to investigate the cause of it to determine the extension of your coverage.

All insurance companies request an inspection before approving the coverage for repairs, and sometimes the process can be tedious, so the sooner you initiate it, the better.

Tip 3: Get Your Home Inspected By An Expert

Make sure you call an experienced restoration contractor to inspect your home.

The contractors will have to check the entire area and document the damages; they might need to secure weak points too temporarily. A full-service restoration contractor would be ideal, so they can also take care of removing the water, cleaning, mitigating the mold, and making repairs.

Tip 4: Clean & Dry Your Home

Proper cleaning and drying of your home will guarantee there’s no mold growth.

The company or contractor you contact might also use dehumidifiers to ensure there’s no space for more mold growth. During this phase also make sure they double-check hidden places for mold growth.

Tip 5: Doing The Repairs

A construction company or restoration contractor that specializes in flooding or natural disaster repairs is best. They will know exactly how to deal with the damages and make the restoration process faster and safe.

For the repairs, choose quality over price; for this, ask the contractor for his certifications and past experiences.

Commercial Fire Board Up Services

9/24/2021 (Permalink)

If your commercial property in Monroe county has experienced a fire, there are several reasons why you might want to board up structural damage or windows. In addition to keeping the external elements out of your home with fire damage, boarding up can also prevent additional losses due to looting and make the fire cleanup process easier.

Most full-service restoration specialists offer boarding-up services. Here are four reasons to board-up after a fire.

1. The premises still have sustainable inventory. If the building still contains products that appear viable, you should consider boarding. These products may involve evaluation and cleaning and may not be suitable for sale, but it may be useful for insurance reasons to have them correctly processed rather than stolen.

2. You want electronics and other valuables to be protected. You may be able to restore certain electronics or other precious assets to working condition depending on the extent of the fire damage. Loss can be much more costly than repairing or replacing covered.

3. You need to keep out the elements. If the structure of your property has sustained extensive damage, you should try to keep the elements out. Exposure to additional water, wind, or sunlight can compound the damage caused by smoke residue and soot.

4. You want to limit soot damage. It is generally a good idea to reduce foot traffic on the scene of a recent fire. When soot gets embedded into carpeting or upholstery, it can be much more difficult to restore these materials to a pre-fire condition.

Talk to restoration experts at SERVPRO of East Monroe County about whether boarding-up is a good strategy for preventing loss and limiting damage after a fire. Your major concern is likely to be how to recover from fire damage as quickly and completely as possible. Preventing looting and exposure to the elements can make fire cleanup more successful.

3 Tips for Using a Fire Extinguisher

9/23/2021 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers are essential fire suppression equipment. Commercial building owners and occupants should know how to choose and safely use any fire extinguisher. Applying the right type of suppressant to open flames has the potential to minimize fire damage and safety risks during a fire at a commercial building in Rochester, NY.

1. Use the Right Extinguisher Class
There are five classes of fire extinguishers and commercial buildings may be equipped with one or more extinguisher types. Class A extinguishers contain suppressants for ordinary combustibles, while Class B extinguishers put out blazes fed by flammable liquids. Class K extinguishers are formulated for commercial kitchen fires. Class C extinguishers contain suppressants for electrical fires, and Class D extinguishers put out fires fueled by combustible metals.

2. Do the PASS Method
The PASS method is the best way to limit fire damage. Pull the pin, aim the fire extinguisher hose at the base of a blaze, squeeze the handle and sweep spray from side to side. Although this method puts out some fires, the force of the spray may spread grease fires. In these cases, dousing flames or limiting airflow may prove effective.

3. Plan Ahead for Evacuation
Before using an extinguisher, a building occupant should make sure that he or she will be able to safely evacuate the area if it is not possible to put out the flames. Anyone attempting to suppress a fire should exercise caution to prevent flames from blocking off the most convenient route out of a burning building.
These fire extinguisher tips are only helpful if a commercial building is equipped with the proper class and number of fire extinguishers. The fire hazard level of a structure will determine the number and positioning of extinguishers. Fire safety codes may require that extinguishers be spaced 30, 50 or 75 feet apart at a building in Rochester, NY.

Water Damage at a Local Commercial Building

When you call SERVPRO of East Monroe County, we will respond to your location right away. We will assess the loss and make sure there is no hidden water in other rooms. Here is a rough time table of damage caused by water as it dwells in a structure:

Within Minutes:

  • Water spreads throughout your property
  • Water absorbs into the walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets
  • Paper goods like photographs and books can start to swell and warp

Hours 1-24:

  • Metal surfaces begin to rust
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and cause staining
  • Paint begins to blister

48 Hours – 1 week

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down
  • Mold may start growing
  • Doors, windows, and framing studs swell and warp
  • Wood flooring swells and warps
  • Microbial contamination is possible

More than 1 week

  • Restoration time and costs increases, with more materials needing replaced
  • Structural safety, mold growth, and biohazard contaminants pose increased risks to occupants

Fire Damage: Partial vs Total Losses

5/3/2021 (Permalink)

A partial loss indicates that a structure was not irreparably damaged. In general, this level of damage may require restoration and repairs, but not a complete rebuild. Find out how to determine the extent of fire loss:

The Damage Is Limited

If a particular area of a structure has sustained fire damage while other areas are only affected by heat or smoke, the loss is likely to be partial. The following are some of the most common forms of partial loss:

  • Burnt or charred building materials or contents
  • Heat-damaged building materials or contents
  • Smoke-damaged building materials or contents

Buildings that remain structurally sound can still suffer an extensive partial loss. An actual total loss involves a situation in which a property has burned down or sustained such extensive structural damage that a complete rebuild is necessary.

Restoration Is An Option
A fire loss is likely partial if a building can be cleaned and restored. This even applies to situations in which a certain portion of a structure sustains significant damage and may have to be rebuilt, but the building remains structurally sound on the whole and safe for occupation after cleaning and restoration.

Contents Can Be Restored or Replaced
Fire damage at a commercial building is likely to involve damaged contents. Getting a professional verdict on the condition of equipment can facilitate claim settlement. Any assessment should account for fire, heat, and smoke damage. It is helpful to have an insurance policy that covers replacement costs rather than actual cash value with depreciation.

In the event of a partial fire loss, cleanup and restoration experts should check for hidden damage. Fire damage that appears minor may actually be more extensive. Experienced fire restoration professionals can inspect and accurately identify the extent of loss for the purpose of making an insurance claim.

SERVPRO® Named a Top 10 Franchise Amid Coronavirus Pandemic, Active Storm Season

4/1/2021 (Permalink)

Cleanup and restoration company attains #10 ranking in Entrepreneur Magazine’s 2021 Franchise 500 rankings

Gallatin, TN, February 18, 2021 –  For the first time since 2016, SERVPRO, a cleanup and restoration franchise company, has been named a Top 10 overall franchise opportunity in the nation by Entrepreneur Magazine, as well as the #1 position in the cleaning and restoration industry for nearly 20 years in a row.

“In 2020, SERVPRO franchises across the U.S. and Canada responded to numerous natural disasters such as hurricanes along the Gulf Coast and East Coast and wildfires in the West. But it was the launch of SERVPRO’s new disinfecting and COVID-19 cleanup service that tested and proved the company’s resolve,” CEO Rick Isaacson said.

“SERVPRO’s #10 overall ranking is a result of the hard work our franchises, their crews, and our dedicated headquarters team put in while many businesses were not so lucky,” Isaacson said. “So many businesses were negatively impacted, slowed, or closed due to the pandemic. When COVID forced much of the world to slow down or step back, our team stepped up and did what it took, whether that was cleaning businesses so they could reopen safely or disinfecting first responders’ vehicles – many of those at no cost – to give back to those working every day to keep us safe.”

The company’s most common revenue lines come from residential and commercial fire and water cleanup and restoration. Franchises respond to natural disasters such as wildfires and hurricanes, including a record-setting 2020 storm season. “We’re basically a first-response company, so we go in when everyone else is running out,” Isaacson added.

The Franchise 500 list uses objective and quantifiable measures of a franchise operation to help would-be entrepreneurs identify franchise investment opportunities. The evaluation process is based on what the magazine calls “The Five Pillars of the Franchise 500©”: Costs and Fees; Size and Growth; Support; Brand Strength; and Financial Strength and Stability.

“SERVPRO was founded in 1967 as a painting company. Today, we are a mature restoration services organization with more than 1,900 individually owned and operated franchises under a single brand,” Isaacson said. “Our franchisees respond to property damage emergencies ranging from small individual disasters to multi-million dollar large-loss events. Maintaining our position for more than two consecutive decades as the best franchise opportunity in our category on the Entrepreneur Franchise 500 list validates our long-standing strategy for growing our brand: investing in franchisee training and support and doing whatever it takes to help entrepreneurs succeed.”

How to Prepare for a House Fire

12/5/2020 (Permalink)

A fire can be devastating to your Rochester, NY home.  In some cases, the flames may be small enough that you can put them out on your own. However, if the fire is large and spreads quickly, it is more important that you get your family out of the house safely. It can be helpful to create a fire escape plan to use in the event of an emergency. The following are a few ways to stay prepared:

  1. Locate All Potential Exits
During a fire, it is possible that you will be unable to reach the doors that you usually use to leave your house. For this reason, make sure you know all possible ways to exit the building. On lower floors, this can include windows as well as doors. Create multiple fire escape routes to each exit.
  2. Determine a Meeting Spot
If your family is not all together when a fire occurs, it can sometimes be difficult to tell who has made it out of the house and who hasn’t. Setting a designated meeting area outside the home can help. Make sure that everyone knows where to meet after exiting the building.
  3. Practice Drills Regularly
An important part of fire preparation is practice. During a fire, panic can make it difficult to think clearly. If you practice often, this will help the plans stick. You should have a realistic drill at least every six months.
  4. Ensure Alarms Are Working
Creating a fire escape plan may not be as helpful if your alarms are not able to alert you to a fire. You should test batteries monthly and keep the device free of dust and debris. If your alarm uses traditional batteries, these should be changed once or twice a year.

5 Tips for Preventing Water Damage in your Home

11/6/2020 (Permalink)

Roof Leak in Rochester, NY

With winter around the corner, now is the time to check your home for any possible future water damage. Common causes of water damage are leaks, pipe bursts, and drainage issues. Take a look at a list we’ve put together of common occurrences we notice in the winter months.

  1. Inspect your Roof & Gutters

Inspect your roof by walking around the outside perimeter of your home to look for signs of sagging, aging and damage such as buckled or missing shingles.

  1. Examine the inside of your Home; like Leaky Windows & Doors

Keep an eye on windows and doors during heavy rain fall to make sure no water is seeping in. If you do come to find that water is making its way into your home, try resealing around the frame with caulking. If the water persists, contact a local professional to have your siding inspected.

  1. Test that your Sump Pump is in good working condition

This can be performed by simply unplugging and plugging the pump back in. If the pump does not immediately turn back on, it is in need of repair.

Another way of testing your sump pump’s ability is by running water through it. You will only need enough water to lift the float until the pump kicks on. The pump kicking on will confirm that the pump is working properly.

  1. Check for any leaks coming from your Hot Water Heater

Inspect the area around your hot water heater to make sure no puddles have formed. Water around your heater typically indicates the temperature and pressure release valve have failed. This can lead to major water damage.

  1. Know the location of your Main Water Shut Off Valve

Out of all of these guidelines, this one may be the most important. You should know where your main water shut off valve is located in the event that water flow to your home be immediately terminated. It is important to note that as long as the water is coming from your homes water supply, you can shut it down quickly.

If a disaster does strike in your Rochester home this winter, call SERVPRO of East Monroe County at (585) 641-0040 so we can get your home back to normal as soon as possible!

Cleaning Up After a Fire Damage

11/5/2020 (Permalink)

When our first responders put out a fire, a substantial amount of water is used to quench the flames. All of that water ends up seeping into the home and in addition to the damage already caused by the fire, water damage also begins to take place. While some home fires are contained to a small area of the home, the water used to put out the fire ends up spreading throughout the rest of the structure. Unaddressed water damage can lead to mold growth, added structural instability caused by wood rot, and a chain of problems following that would otherwise be considered unrelated.

As the crews of SERVPRO of East Monroe County begin the restoration process on your home, the first thing we want to address is the water damage. By doing this, we make sure that the water damage doesn’t further compromise the structure.

We understand the stress that is caused by a house fire. And we are trained on how to handle them. SERVPRO of East Monroe County is here to help you restore your property after such a loss.  Call us today (585) 641-0040

Be Prepared for Outages during Storm Season

9/25/2020 (Permalink)

As the seasons change, New York will be entering storm season. Whether it be wind, rain, freezing precipitation, or snow, keeping your home prepared for weather emergencies is crucial. Here at SERVPRO of East Monroe County, we’re passionate about signal-boosting preparedness information to our communities.

No matter the storm event, there is always a risk of power outages in your power network. Power outages may disrupt communications, water, and transportation. They may also create obstacles to business as usual, such as preventing you from being able to use gas stations, ATMs, banks, and other services as normal. At the most critical, power outages can cause food spoilage, water contamination, and disrupt medical devices, posing health risks to communities.

Review these steps to see how you can protect yourself and your household in the event of a power outage:

  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed until power is back on.
  • Only use generators outdoors and away from windows.
  • Do not use a gas stove to heat your home.
  • Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.
  • Have alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or using power dependent medical devices.
  • If safe, go to an alternative location for heat and cooling.
  • Check on neighbors.

To read more about how you prepare for power outages and storm events, visit ready.gov. If you experience storm damage to your home, make sure to call SERVPRO of East Monroe County at 585-641-0040 as soon as possible - even without power, we are able to respond 24/7 during storm events.

Is a Wet-Dry Vacuum enough to Remove Water from my Home?

9/24/2020 (Permalink)

No matter when you make the call, we have technicians who can assist you.

Protect your Rochester Home by Inviting a Professional Service and their Water Removal Equipment.

Imagine the water heater of your home breaking and leaking all over your kitchen and living areas. It may leak overnight, allowing the water to travel freely throughout your home, soaking walls, carpets, and baseboards. Your first reaction could be to go to your local store to rent a wet-dry vacuum to resolve the situation. Even though this is a logical step, you may fall short and leave water hiding throughout your home, which can later cause issues such as mold or a weaker structure.

For our neighbors in Monroe County, water damage restoration is a job for our SERVPRO team. We are certified by the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC), which parallels our experience in restoring homes like yours. Even if your water damage does not appear extensive, call our 24-hour hotline for our expert opinion. You might be surprised by how quickly water can seep into your home and set the stage for significant damage.

What is the best equipment to extract water?

Water extraction is not a one-size-fits-all approach. The volume of water, the materials in your home, natural humidity and many other factors play into our ability to restore your home. It is not uncommon for Monroe County homeowners to feel like excess moisture is under control only to realize later that water was hiding under baseboards or within a wall cavity. Our SERVPRO crew has several measuring tools at its disposal, including infrared technology, which can pinpoint problem areas. We can also use one or several of the following to remove water and restore optimal humidity levels-

Truck-mounted pumps which we can connect to municipal sewers as needed.

Submersible pumps to place within your home.

Wand extractors to access the hard to reach corners of your home.

Don't underestimate the impact of water to your home. SERVPRO of East Monroe County is available at (585) 641-0040 whenever a leak occurs. Let us work with you to leave your home, "Like it never even happened."

We have the Effective Removal Strategies in Monroe County after a Flood

9/24/2020 (Permalink)

We have the state of the art equipment necessary to extract the water quickly to mitigate the water damage in your home after a flood.

Storm Debris Cleanup and Water Removal in Monroe County Homes

After a flood, your Rochester home might not even look the same as it used to. Invading water can bring untold debris and threats into the property, and these are conditions that you must recognize. It is crucial that if you are one of the first people to re-enter your home after a flood that you do so cautiously. You are looking for several potential hazards, including shock threats, structural weaknesses, holes, and dangerous debris like broken glass or contaminants.

Post-storm debris cleanup is regularly the first step in the restoration of flood damage to homes. Our SERVPRO professionals can also utilize this time when we first begin working on your property to remove standing water to better protect your house from requiring more elaborate controlled demolition. In certain situations, our technicians must shovel out sediment, mud, and other solids deposited on the floors of the affected areas of your house. Dry and wet vacuuming can also help to remove smaller bits of debris that are not as easily removed with shoveling and sweeping.

In many situations, we cannot begin full debris removal and cleaning of the affected areas because our SERVPRO technicians must first contend with standing water. Flood damage scenarios can allow for several feet of standing water in the most directly damaged areas of the house. Because the presence of solids is expected in this water, we can utilize stronger options with larger intake hoses like our gas-powered trash pumps.

Once we have dropped the water level to no more than two inches, devices like our wet vacuums can become useful both for the present debris and for removing the remaining surface water.

Flooding can become a devastating situation for many homeowners, and this can begin with the widespread threats that can enter the property with debris and contaminants. Our SERVPRO of East Monroe County team have effective removal strategies and disinfection techniques that can manage these situations and make flood losses “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call anytime at (585) 641-0040.

Extraction Equipment Used In Flooded Monroe County Schools

Flooding can be a detrimental situation that completely ruins areas like carpeting and linoleum tilework of a Mahopac school. With how quickly these effects can spread throughout your institution, it can easily exceed the reach and resources of your custodial and maintenance staff. Our SERVPRO professionals have a fast response to flooding and water loss emergencies that affect our area schools because we know that hundreds of people get impacted by loss incidents like these.

Standing water can often be one of the most hazardous effects of flood damage in Monroe County schools, as this can continually damage the surfaces exposed and saturate structural elements until this high volume gets removed. Our professionals have a massive inventory of recovery tools and equipment, including a wide selection of extraction machines and devices. From light wands to trash pumps, we have the equipment to suit the specific needs of your building. It is our objective from the moment that mitigation work begins to get your doors back open to students and faculty as promptly as possible.

Flood loss scenarios can be widespread and destructive, spreading beyond the penetration point throughout other rooms and communal areas on the same level of the school. Understanding the Risks of Entering a House with Flood Damage in Rochester

9/22/2020 (Permalink)

Our Highly Trained Crews can Help After Flood Damage

Floodwater is noticeably dirty and often carries visible pieces of garbage, organic matter like tree branches, and other debris. Dissolved chemicals and liquids might include acids, oils, and pesticides. The residual mess can harbor pathogens long after floodwaters leave your residence, adding to the health risks now in existence inside your Monroe County property. Drying out your home and replacing damaged items must happen only after the elimination of such risks.

Contamination is not the only risk that residents face when entering their property after flood damage occurs. Weakened floors can collapse, as can ceilings in basements if they contain floodwater. The weight of people and water can warp flooring tiles and crumpled carpeting, thus creating trip hazards. Waterlogged walls made of drywall or covered in plaster can also collapse sideways. Electrical hazards exist throughout a property after even a minor flood, including cords, appliances, outlets, and inside walls.

We rely on our building specialists to handle drywall tear-outs, carpet and tile removal, electrical testing, and repairs. Also, clearing out the main drain line and ensuring the sump pump works correctly, as we work on removing soil and silt dumped into corners and closets.

When we finish clearing a floor of debris, we rinse it with clean running water. While we do not power wash it, it has a similar effect of removing the finer sediments that our shovels and squeegees did not remove. Then we can apply a disinfectant that kills any leftover pathogens.

Once we have cleared floors of debris and we have removed contaminated materials like drywall, we can start drying out the house for you. Our building crew works to ensure that the house’s frame remains not only stable but also strong. Reinforcements might need to occur throughout your home, before the installation of new drywall but after drying takes place.

SERVPRO of East Monroe County understands the precise steps that must take place to bring your house back to normal, safe living conditions. Call (585) 641-0040, 24-hours a day, year-round, to speak with someone who understands how to make a difficult situation manageable.

5 Steps to take After a Pipe Break

4/30/2020 (Permalink)

Flooded basement in Rochester, NY

If you think your Rochester, NY property may be at risk for bursting pipes, there are a number of things you can to help mitigate the issue. Calling a professional beforehand to inspect the plumbing can help ensure that repairs are made before water damage occurs. However, sometimes a broken pipe can still occur. Here are five steps you can take if that does happen.

1. Turn Off the Water

Before you can fix broken pipe issues, you will need to ensure that the water to the affected area is turned off. This will prevent further flooding until the source of the pipe break can be located and fixed.

2. Begin Flood Water Removal

Once the water is off it’s important to begin the removal of any flood water as quickly as possible. For large scale jobs you may want to use a pump, but for small leaks towels and a squeegee may be enough.

3. Call a Professional

When dealing with bursting pipes you may want to contact a local water damage restoration service as quickly as possible. These professionals can help with water removal, drying the area, and repairs.

4. Dry the Area

Once the water has been removed the affected area will need to be thoroughly dried. A dehumidifier may help with this process as it can help pull moisture from the air..

5. Begin Restoration

After the water is removed and the area dried you can begin the restoration process. Your water damage team should also be able to help with this part of the process.
If your business does encounter water damage in Rochester, NY  from bursting pipes, there are a few things you should do. Turning off the water, beginning the removal of flood water, and calling a professional should be first. After which you can begin to dry the area and make repairs.

3 Ways to Remove Smoke Odor from Your Home

4/30/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Ozone Generator

If you’ve experienced a fire in your Rochester, NY home, chances are you’ve already had quite a bit of damage to deal with. Unfortunately, odor from smoke damage can linger even after repairs have been made. If you are having trouble removing this unpleasant smell from your house, try the following methods.

1. Clean Hard Surfaces

When smoke travels through your house during a fire, it carries soot and other contaminants. These can cover your belongings as well as walls and floors. In order to remove the odor from these areas, you will need to include them in your smoke cleaning. If you have not already done so, scrub any hard surfaces that have been affected. This will likely include spaces outside the immediate area of the fire since smoke travels further than flames.

2. Wash Porous Materials

Because smoke carries contaminants, this easily allows smoke odor to become trapped inside porous materials. For smaller items, such as clothing and stuffed toys, a spin through the washing machine may remove any lingering smells. Items that are more difficult to clean, such as upholstered furniture, mattresses and dry-clean only materials, may need to be replaced.

3. Use Professional Equipment

Sometimes, after cleaning the surfaces of your home and washing or removing all affected belongings, there is still an unpleasant odor left inside the house. When this happens, you may need to try a different approach to smoke cleaning. Equipment such as ozone machines and other air filtration devices can help eliminate odors by cleaning the air itself. It removes any present smoke molecules and leaves you with clean air that smells fresher.
If you have tried to perform smoke cleaning on your own but have not had the desired results, hiring a fire damage restoration company may be the best choice. With their training, experience and equipment, they will be able to get your home looking, and smelling, like it did before the fire.

Hurricane Season

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of South-East Monroe County News And Updates

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Conditions that cause floods include heavy or steady rain for several hours or days that saturates the ground. Flash floods occur suddenly due to rapidly rising water along a stream or low-lying area.

Know the Difference
Flood/Flash Flood Watch—Flooding or flash flooding is possible in your area.
Flood/Flash Flood Warning—Flooding or flash flooding is already occurring or will occur soon in your area.

What to do:

Listen to area radio and television stations and a NOAA Weather Radio for possible flood warnings and reports of flooding in progress or other critical
information from the National Weather Service (NWS).
- Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
- When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.
- Stay away from floodwaters. If you come upon a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
- If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
- Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.
- Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.
- Because standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding, it’s important to have protection from the floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the U.S. For more information on flood insurance, please visit the National Flood Insurance Program Web site at www.FloodSmart.gov.

Did you know that cleaning your ducts and vents can help airflow and increase energy efficiency? While the cost to clean ducts and vents might sound high, the benefits to homeowners?especially those sensitive to allergens?is worth considering.

Residential fires during the holiday season are more frequent, more costly, and more deadly than at any other time of the year. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) reports more than double the number of open-flame fires on Christmas Day than on an average day, and about twice as many on New Year’s Day. And when those fires occur, they do more damage: Property loss during a holiday fire is 34% greater than in an average fire, and the number of fatalities per thousand fires is nearly 70% higher. When the source of the fire is a highly flammable Christmas tree, the toll in property and lives is even greater.

To keep your household from becoming a holiday fire statistic, here are some safety tips to follow.

Cooking

Cooking is the top cause of holiday fires, according to the USFA. The most common culprit is food that’s left unattended. It’s easy to get distracted; take a pot holder with you when you leave the kitchen as a reminder that you have something on the stove. Make sure to keep a kitchen fire extinguisher that’s rated for all types of fires, and check that smoke detectors are working.

If you’re planning to deep-fry your holiday turkey, do it outside, on a flat, level surface at least 10 feet from the house.

Candles

The incidence of candle fires is four times higher during December than during other months. According to the National Fire Protection Association, four of the five most dangerous days of the year for residential candle fires are Christmas/Christmas Eve and New Year’s/New Year’s Eve. (The fifth is Halloween.)

To reduce the danger, maintain about a foot of space between the candle and anything that can burn. Set candles on sturdy bases or cover with hurricane globes. Never leave flames unattended. Before bed, walk through each room to make sure candles are blown out. For atmosphere without worry, consider flameless LED candles.

Christmas Trees

It takes less than 30 seconds for a dry tree to engulf a room in flames, according to the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Standards and Technology. “They make turpentine out of pine trees,” notes Tom Olshanski, spokesman for the USFA. “A Christmas tree is almost explosive when it goes.”

To minimize risk, buy a fresh tree with intact needles, get a fresh cut on the trunk, and water it every day. A well-watered tree is almost impossible to ignite. Keep the tree away from heat sources, such as a fireplace or radiator, and out of traffic patterns. If you’re using live garlands and other greenery, keep them at least three feet away from heating sources.

No matter how well the tree is watered, it will start to dry out after about four weeks, Olshanski says, so take it down after the holidays. Artificial trees don’t pose much of a fire hazard; just make sure yours is flame-retardant.

Decorative Lights

Inspect light strings, and throw out any with frayed or cracked wires or broken sockets. When decorating, don’t run more than three strings of lights end to end. “Stacking the plugs is much safer when you’re using a large quantity of lights,” explains Brian L. Vogt, director of education for holiday lighting firm Christmas Décor. Extension cords should be in good condition and UL-rated for indoor or outdoor use. Check outdoor receptacles to make sure the ground fault interrupters don’t trip. If they trip repeatedly, Vogt says, that’s a sign that they need to be replaced.

When hanging lights outside, avoid using nails or staples, which can damage the wiring and increase the risk of a fire. Instead, use UL-rated clips or hangers. And take lights down within 90 days, says John Drengenberg, director of consumer safety for Underwriters Laboratories.  “If you leave them up all year round, squirrels chew on them and they get damaged by weather.”

Kids Playing with Matches

The number of blazes — and, tragically, the number of deaths — caused by children playing with fire goes up significantly during the holidays. From January through March, 13% of fire deaths are the result of children playing with fire, the USFA reports; in December, that percentage doubles. So keep matches and lighters out of kids’ reach. “We tend to underestimate the power of these tools,” says Meri-K Appy, president of the nonprofit Home Safety Council. “A match or lighter could be more deadly than a loaded gun in the hands of a small child.”

Fireplaces

Soot can harden on chimney walls as flammable creosote, so before the fireplace season begins, have your chimney inspected to see if it needs cleaning. Screen the fireplace to prevent embers from popping out onto the floor or carpet, and never use flammable liquids to start a fire in the fireplace. Only burn seasoned wood — no wrapping paper.

When cleaning out the fireplace, put embers in a metal container and set them outside to cool for 24 hours before disposal.

Thanksgiving Safety

For most, the kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the holidays. From testing family recipes to decorating cakes and cookies, everyone enjoys being part of the preparations. With that being said, keeping fire safety top of mind during this joyous but hectic time is important, especially when there's a lot of activity and people at home. As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that large feast, remember, by following a few simple safety tips you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safer.

Statistics

  • In 2015, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,760 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving.

  • Cooking equipment was involved in almost half of all reported home fires and home fire injuries.

Safety Tips

  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove-top.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently.
  • Keep children away from the stove.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids.
  • Keep the floor clear so you don't have any slips, trips or falls.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Be sure electric cords are not dangling off the counter.

Prevent Frozen Pipes this Winter

12/3/2019 (Permalink)

Frozen Pipes Can Burst!

It is starting to get colder here in Rochester, NY! When cold temperatures happen that can cause pipes to freeze. Frozen Pipes can result in costly repairs to you as a home or business owner. The good news is there are ways to prevent pipes from freezing. Here are some tips for this winter.Frozen pipes are a problem by themselves because they prevent water flow, but even worse, frozen pipes can eventually burst, causing damage and potential flooding. There are ways to protect your pipes from freezing. These include:

  1. Keeping your house warm - If you are leaving for a period of time, make sure that the heat is kept on at your property. You should inform them that the heat can help prevent pipes from freezing, and if pipes freeze and burst, it can cause a lot of water damage to the property and to their possessions. The heat doesn’t have to be kept as high as you normally would keep it if you were home but keeping it set above 50 degrees Fahrenheit at all times is a good idea. This should provide enough heat to keep the pipes warm and to prevent any water inside from freezing.
  2. Opening faucets - When temps hit the freezing level it is a good idea to allow faucets to drip. Allowing the faucet to be open like this will relieve pressure in the pipe. If a pipe freezes, it is actually the pressure that is created between the blockage and the faucet that will cause the pipe to burst. With the faucet open you avoid blockage in the pipes.
  3. Insulation is key - Pipes can be fitted with foam rubber or fiberglass sleeves to help decrease the chances of freezing. This can be an easy solution for pipes that are exposed but can get expensive if walls, floors or ceilings have to be opened in order to properly insulate the pipe. Additional insulation can also be added to walls and ceilings to keep the pipes warm.

3 Services SERVPRO Provides after Storms

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

3 Services SERVPRO Provides

Demand for damage mitigation and restoration services spikes after a severe storm in Rochester NY.  Insurance agents and adjusters need to be able to rely on a local mitigation and restoration company to provide timely storm response services. Here are three services that make a local SERVPRO franchise the right choice for storm restoration.

1. Disaster Response

No matter how many properties are affected by a storm, a Disaster Response Team can arrive on each location within a matter of hours. Independent mitigation and restoration services are more likely to be backlogged than a national corporation that can dispatch employees and equipment from nearby franchises to areas that have experienced large losses.

2. Mitigation and Cleanup

The initial stage of storm response involves mitigating damage. In the case of structural damage, this may involve boarding up broken windows or breaches in a building envelope or tarping over a damaged roof. Standing water resulting from flood damage should be extracted as soon as possible. A full-service company can ensure that these initial measures contribute toward complete storm restoration.

3. All-In-One Restoration

A company that offers mitigation and restoration services can reduce the workload on insurance agents and adjusters while simplifying the claim process for property owners. Relying on a one-stop shop may make miscommunication less likely, prevent scheduling conflicts and allow for a faster and more thorough restoration job. Depending on a single service also means that the initial estimate is likely to be more accurate.

These storm restoration services set SERVPRO franchises apart from independent companies. The business model means that each location has the backing of a national corporation and the ability to call on nearby locations for additional personnel and equipment. A single estimate from a service that can clean up damage and rebuild a commercial property can also be more convenient for insurance agents, adjusters, and clients.

Fire Safety Tips for Homeowners

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

  1. Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.

  2. Test smoke alarms every month. If they’re not working, change the batteries.

  3. Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.  Especially with children, the more they are prepared the less scared they will be!

  4. If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP. Never go back inside for anything or anyone.

We partner with the American Red Cross and also our local fire departments so fire prevention is VERY important to us! These tips are from REDCROSS.ORG

10 Things to Focus on when dealing with Water Damage

11/27/2019 (Permalink)

Experiencing a water loss can be a traumatic time for you or your business. In Rochester, New York, we experience all types of water damage situations. We wanted to put together a free guide of 10 things that walks you through the process of what to focus on if you have a water loss in your home or business.

1. Assess the situation: It is critical to look over the situation and see exactly what you are dealing with. It is critical to make sure that you take plenty of photographs of the damage and make sure that the source of what caused the damage is well documented. It is extremely important to make sure you do not walk or enter the water if the power is still on in the home or business. At this time it is proper to check with your insurance company to see what type of coverage you have.

2. Check was is wet throughout the damaged area: Through the use of moisture meters and other devices, you can begin to see what is wet and not wet. It is critical that you map out the damage and affected area. This can be an important part of the documentation process.

3. Begin the water extraction process: The first step after the documentation has begun, is to get the water removed as soon as possible. If the water sits for too long it can begin to create secondary damages. Water can be removed by using portable or truck mount extractors. Portables will take more time, and the truck mounts are much faster and efficient.

4. Begin to remove damaged materials that can not be dried and ventilate enclosed areas: Once all of the water has been extracted, certain flood cuts and other vent holes might be necessary. This is to allow air flow in closed off spaces. If no ventilation is allowed, secondary damage can occur inside the walls. Many times if you are dealing with sewage water, more flood cuts will be necessary. Try to take as many before and after photos as well.

5. Start to place air movers and dehumidifiers throughout the home or facility: The proper amount of equipment is critical when drying out a structure. It is important to make sure that all of the guidelines of the IICRC are followed to insure proper drying times. Be sure to continue to take plenty of photographs of the equipment in place on the job.

6. Monitor the drying process daily: Every 24 hours it is critical to make sure that you are checking the facility to make sure that it is drying. Sometimes there might be a delay in the drying process due to the source of the damage not being corrected. If so it will need to be corrected so proper drying can occur. Be sure to document the drying data each day for accurate records.

7. Remove Equipment: Once the home or building is dry, all of the equipment can be removed. It is important to make sure the right cleaning products are used to clean up the affected area. This will keep other secondary issues from happening as well.

8. Document with more photos: After the job is complete, be sure to document with more photos. This will keep accurate records for your insurance company from start to finish. You can never take too many photos when dealing with a water loss.

9. Begin the reconstruction process: Once everything is dry, you can begin to put the pieces back together. In some cases you might have to hire a contractor to do specific tasked like repair damaged drywall from the water. Be sure to continue to document any and all work on your home or business.

10. Keep complete records on file: After the entire job is complete, be sure to keep all of your records on backup. This can be valuable in case of any secondary damages in the future.

SERVPRO of East Monroe County can handle any water damage job from start to finish. It is critical to make sure you understand the in's and out's of each step mentioned above. Electrical Safety Tips!

11/6/2019 (Permalink)

In the past year, SERVPRO of East Monroe County has seen numerous electrical fires. One fire in Pittsford was caused by a cell phone charger and the entire single-family home burned to the ground.

SERVPRO of East Monroe County recommends the following tips to make sure you are protected:

  1. Electrical Extension Cords. If you have tenants regularly using extension cords, you may need additional outlets installed in some units. Extension cords are always meant to be a short-term solution.
  2. Tamper Resistant Outlets. Install tamper resistant outlets for day care centers or schools to ensure no one gets shocked or no inappropriate objects are put into outlets.
  3. GFCI Outlets. Inspect GFCI outlets to reduce risk of electrical shock to your tenants. National Code requires them in all kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoor areas.
  4. Panel and AFCI Receptacles. Be sure to inspect your electrical panels and AFCI receptacles. Both works to ensure safe conditions if an arc fault is detected. An arc fault is when damaged wiring or a device creates a hot or unsafe situation.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. When various materials burn, the soot and residue they create differs greatly and requires a specific cleaning procedure. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage restoration. Learn more about our fire damage restoration process.

  • Emergency Contact
  • Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
  • Immediate Board-Up and Roof Tarp Service (if needed)
  • Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

  • Cleaning and Repair
  • Restoration

Detecting the Water behind the scenes

11/1/2019 (Permalink)

Moisture Meters (pictured) are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials.

Even small water damages have the potential to cause serious structural and indoor air quality issues over time that you may not be able to even see.

The key to avoiding costly future restoration is to handle every water problem as a real threat to your property. SERVPRO® of East Monroe County has the equipment, training and experience to find and dry unseen water before secondary damages occur. The proper equipment makes a measurable difference in reducing the damage expense during a fire or water loss. When time matters, technology and equipment must be counted on to perform. SERVPRO® of East Monroe County will answer your call with fast action and a full arsenal of drying equipment. Here are a few of the tools used by your local SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals.

  • Moisture Sensors are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and Moisture Meters (pictured) are used to determine the actual moisture content of various materials. The moisture tester provides accurate readings, allowing SERVPRO® Franchise Professionals to monitor the drying process.
  • Thermohygrometers measure temperature and relative humidity. When armed with this information, SERVPRO® of East Monroe County can calculate and create an environment most conclusive to drying.
  • When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.
  • Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach
  • Thermal Foggers (pictured) dispense solvent-based produces by creating a dense fog. The fog consists of tiny particles of deodorant solution that attach to and neutralize odor causing particles.

What is the bottom line? SERVPRO® of East Monroe County (585-641-0040) has the training and equipment to help make it "Like it never even happened."

Drying Hardwood Floors after Water Damage in Pittsford

11/1/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Technicians Quickly Assess and Then Dry Out Your Home After Water Damage

Perhaps one of the most discouraging sights a Victor homeowner sees after excessive water enters living areas is damage to hardwood floors. Regardless of the source of the moisture, if enough is present, it eventually spreads across the floors of your home. Although properly installed and finished hardwood is resilient if the spill or leak is mopped up quickly, more extended exposure can swell and distort the organic fibers of the floor. We have strategies that prevent further damage and can ready the surface for restoration.

The source of water damage to your Pittsford hardwood floors can vary, from overflowing tubs and sinks, leaking aquariums, rain blown in an open window, plumbing fails in nearby walls or a host of other reasons. Vigilance on the part of the homeowner in cleaning up occasional spills and a call for professional help when a more significant water event occurs is critical. The faster our well-qualified water remediation crews respond, the more likely your hardwood floors recover successfully from water damage.

When we arrive, the crew chief assesses the situation, noting the ingress point of the water and the migration pattern of the moisture across the floor. SERVPRO uses sensitive moisture meters to map out the areas of damage and to establish a baseline as we determine the drying goals for the flooring. Hardwood typically lies over at least one type of subfloor which can contribute to unresolved and continuous water damage if we do not address its drying as well.

SERVPRO technicians employ extraction equipment always available on our service vehicles to remove standing water. We use pumps for water deeper than two inches, and truck-mounted wanded extractors for residual, non-absorbed moisture. After the surface is clear of water, we move to advanced technologies such as drying mats to remove the moisture saturated inside the planks and in the subfloor.

Drying mats permit multiple and customizable configurations best designed to remove the water fast in the areas targeted by our metered readings. Hoses concentrate pressurized air over panels adhered with an airtight seal on the water damaged expanses. The water from all flooring layers suctions out as the system works. SERVPRO employees train extensively on how to operate the drying mats, adjusting and adapting the configuration as the drying progresses.

Take advantage of our specialized floor drying equipment and the experience of our trained technicians at SERVPRO of East Monroe County. Avoid the necessity of replacing expensive and beautiful hardwood floors after water damage with one call to (585) 641-0040.

Commercial Carpet Maintenance

9/25/2019 (Permalink)

The carpeting in an office can quickly because soiled due to heavy traffic. Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair and other soils into the fibers to the carpeting. The IICRC believes that soil in carpet is 79% dry soil. Therefore, regular vacuuming is a major factor in keeping up with proper care and maintenance of your carpets. Vacuuming should be done at least once a week. However, in high traffic areas it may be necessary to vacuum once daily.

Other things you can do to help maintain your carpets appearance are…

  • Spot removal. Don’t wait until your whole carpet needs to be cleaned to try to remove a stain or spill from the carpet. Take care of any staining that may occur on the carpet immediately.
  • Move furniture to change traffic patterns. If everyone at your office walks in the same path on the carpet, the carpet will quickly show warn spots in those areas. Those same areas will receive the most amounts of dirt and soil on them while other areas never get walked on. Moving furniture around forces people to walk in different areas of the carpet preventing the carpeting to get worn too quickly in the same areas.
  • Using entryway mats. Using entryway mats limit the amount of soil brought in and tracked onto the carpets. Entryway mats are especially useful during the winter months when salt from the roads and sidewalks can stain the carpeting.
  • Schedule a professional cleaning. Professional carpet cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil in your carpets. We generally recommend having your carpets professionally cleaned at least every 12 months. However we may suggest having your carpets cleaning more frequently based on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting.

Commercial Fire Testimonial

9/23/2019 (Permalink)

Fire and water damages happen when we least expect it. Our goal is to work with our clients and make these stressful situations manageable by providing a thorough scope of work to make it like it never even happened.

We recently worked with a local municipality whose Department of Publics building sustained a fire loss. A snow plow caught fire during the winter season causing smoke and fire damage throughout the garage and office areas. This was a large loss and we needed help! We brought in a SERVPRO Large Loss Response Team, SERVPRO of Broome County out of Binghamton NY.

Their team was there to respond. The project took close to 2 months to complete due to the size and extensive damage. We assisted with structure cleaning, contents cleaning, document restoration, and repair services. Progress updates and photos were provided daily to our client.

When the job was complete our client was more than happy and had this to say:

"Great Job! Very professional. Justin is attentive and considers all of our needs. I would recommend this TEAM to everyone."

Common Causes of Water Damage in Businesses

9/20/2019 (Permalink)

It is usually easy to see when your business is flooding, but some causes of water damage are not so obvious. Determining the origin of the problem may require a bit of detective work, and simply cleaning up the signs of damage often won’t fix the root cause. Be sure to keep an eye out for these common causes of water damage in commercial properties.

Roof Leaks

Small leaks in your roof can lead to large amounts of damage. Flat roofs are particularly susceptible to water damage. Even though most flat roofs do have a slight incline, natural debris, like leaves and branches, can create areas where water can easily build up. Standing water can create cracks and leaks in your roof, which can result in water damage throughout your property.

Even if your roof has a steep incline, debris and freezing temperatures in the winter can create natural dams on your roof. Moss can also cause similar issues as it absorbs water and holds it in place on your roof. Regularly clear moss and debris off your roof to prevent damage.

Ice Dams

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season, especially for commercial buildings with flat roofs. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. When the trapped water cannot safely flow or run into the gutter system, it can backflow under the roof ’s shingles and into the structure’s interior areas, as well as causing gutters and shingles to move or fall.

Icicles can be an initial sign of an ice dam, according to Travelers.com. To spot ice dams inside, “check for water stains or moisture in your attic or along the ceiling of exterior walls of your property. Water stains or moisture may be an indication that an ice dam has formed and water has penetrated the roof membrane.”

Removing an ice dam as soon as it is found is vital to helping prevent damage to your property and can be done using heated cables, a roof shovel, or a calcium chloride ice melter.

Gutter Buildup

Ideally, gutters direct water off your roof and away from your building. However, it’s easy for leaves, branches, and other debris to clog your gutters. Over time, water will build up and start to overflow onto your walls. Small holes can form as well. Instead of guiding water away from your building, water will constantly leak down its walls. This creates an ideal situation for water damage to occur.

Multi-level properties should have the gutters regularly inspected on all roof levels. If gutters start to overflow from a higher level, water can impact lower roofs with greater volume and velocity and cause damage.

Frequently clear out your gutters, especially in the fall or after a windy day.

Broken Pipes

Depending on the location and severity of a broken or leaking pipe, this can be one of the most obvious causes of damage or one of the most subtle.

Winter is a common season for burst pipes. Insufficient insulation can cause pipes to freeze, expand and burst. Commercial buildings may be closed over weekends and frozen pipes can go unnoticed. Rust and age can also damage your pipes.

Unfortunately, it can take a while to notice a leaking pipe, which can give water plenty of time to damage your property. Watch for telltale signs such as lower water pressure, discolored water, or staining on your walls.

Sewage Backup

While you might prefer to avoid sewage in your day-to-day life, tree roots enjoy easy access to sources of water and fertilizer. Tree roots will often grow into and clog drain lines, which causes the sewage to back up and results in water damage in and around your building.

These clogs will often affect multiple drains. If you flush your toilet and hear gurgling coming from the shower drain, you may have a sewer clog. To prevent tree roots from finding their way into your sewage lines, you can install metal or wood barriers running vertically by the lines. Make sure they are buried 6-12” deeper than the pipe.

Toilets and sewer lines can also clog after someone flushes inappropriate items down the toilet. Make sure everyone in your building knows to avoid flushing feminine hygiene products, rags, cotton balls, paper towels, baby wipes, diapers, etc. If it’s not toilet paper, don’t send it down the toilet.

Broken or Malfunctioning Appliances

As water heaters and other appliances age, they can develop rust, leaks, and cracks. Even a small trickle of water can cause damage over time. Keep an eye on your machines as they get older. Watch for any decreases in performance, and inspect the appliances regularly.

Sprinkler Malfunction

Many businesses and apartment facilities have extensive sprinkler systems. Though these systems are meant to help reduce potential damage to these properties, they can often be the cause of major water damage. Many commercial water losses we see come from broken or faulty sprinkler heads or because the sprinklers were set off by a small fire. If left running, these sprinkler heads can flood a building with hundreds of gallons of water very quickly. Be sure to not hang items from sprinkler heads and to avoid setting off alarms with smoke.

HVAC Malfunctions

A leaky or malfunctioning HVAC system can also cause major water damage to a property. Small leaks can go unnoticed for some time and can cause unseen water damage. If not caught early, the damage can become a lot bigger and harder to clean up and restore. Be sure to have your HVAC systems checked regularly. If you are seeing signs of water damage, such as sagging or bulging drywall, or if things are smelling musty and mildew, have us come check it out. We have the equipment to check for hidden water damage. We can let you know if you have water damage.

These are a few of the more common causes of water damage. The truth is, wherever there is water in your commercial building, there is a potential for damage if something goes wrong. At SERVPRO® of East Monroe County, we know how to fix water damage at the source of the problem. Using our experience and training, we offer long-term solutions to make your property “Like it never even happened.”

We know that water problems can occur at any time, which is why we offer 24-hour emergency service. If you find signs of water damage in your building, don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of East Monroe County at 585-641-0040.

Generator Safety Tips

9/20/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross:

  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy-like structure, such as under a tarp held up on poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
  • Opening doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although CO can’t be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately. Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

Be sure to use caution when using generators. And if your home receives damage from fire or storm, give SERVPRO of East Monroe County a call at 585-641-0040

April Showers bring May Flowers

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

April showers help to bring us the most vibrant May flowers and we are so happy with this change of season.

However, when April showers are more like torrential, relentless downpours we could face a flooded basement and other water damage causing costly repairs. Flooding generally occurs in the springtime as the result of heavy rains that cannot be adequately absorbed by the still thawing earth. Particularly formidable are the flash floods resulting from thunderstorms, swiftly melting snow and ice jams in creeks. Consider if more than one of these circumstances happens at the same time, you have the potential for a catastrophe with flooding waters and raging mudslides.

Homeowners you can take some simple precautions to secure your property and keep your possessions safe.

ElevateKeep your furnace, water heater, electrical panels above predicted water levels to protect yourself from costly home replacements.

Install check valvesThese valves close to prevent the backward flow of liquid and prevent water from backing up into the drains in your home.

Build barriers: Use sandbags to create flood walls to prevent or reduce flow of water into your home.

Waterproof the basementUse a waterproofing compound to seal the walls of your basement.

Clean: Clean gutters, drains and downspouts for proper water flow.

Purchase flood insurance: Most standard homeowners' and business insurance policies unfortunately do no cover flood damage. In the event of a flood, you would be responsible for covering the full cost of repairs and replacing items damaged.

We provide emergency cleaning and restoration services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—including all holidays. You can expect an immediate response time, day or night.

Deodorizing After a Fire Damage

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

Things You Should Know

One of the biggest problem after an incidence of fire is the lingering, foul, burnt odor. If the odor is not remedied professionally, it can stay on your property for a long time making it almost impossible to stay there.

Thankfully, professionals can help you get rid of this odor after fire damage to your Lenexa home. The odor after an incidence of fire is a mix of chemical and natural odors due to the burning of wood, plastic, and other building material. Here at SERVPRO, we employ a multi-step process to eliminate odor and get your home smelling like home again- removing, and cleaning. Let's take a closer look at every step.

Removing
One of the first things that SERVPRO technicians do while tackling an odor problem after a fire is removing the source of the odor. The source of odor after a fire damage can be burnt wood or other building materials. Our IICRC certified technicians dispose of the source in a safely and efficiently.

Cleaning
The second step during the deodorizing process is cleaning. Smoke and soot residues can deposit on and even penetrate the various surfaces such as walls and ceilings. SERVPRO technicians clean different surfaces depending on the type of the surface and residue deposited on it.

Sealing
Sealing is not required in most cases, but if the damage is extensive and the removal of the source is too expensive or impractical, it is the best option. Painting walls to seal in the odors is one such case.

We are here to help you in your hour of need. Call SERVPRO of East Monroe County today!

Count on SERVPRO for Cleanup

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

Have you checked under your kitchen or bathroom sink lately? Most people store a variety of cleaners, sponges, and miscellaneous clutter under the sink. It is out of the way, out of sight, but still handy. However, the team at SERVPRO of East Monroe County knows that this can hide potential problems.

Leaks from pipes under the sink are often the source of water damage. The jumble of cleaning solutions, garbage containers, and hair, bath and shower products conceals drops of water and excess amounts of condensation, signs that your under-sink pipes are leaking.

It is a good idea to completely remove everything in the area under your sink every few months. Then carefully inspect the bottom and sides of the cupboard for signs of warping or staining. If you do notice excess moisture, get the pipes checked right away.

Drip by drip, the leak can cause major damage over time to the floor in your bathroom or kitchen, and the ceiling of the room below. It warps the linoleum and weakens the tile setting and causes ceilings and floors to deteriorate. It ruins your possessions and appliances. The excess water damages everything in its path.

When you notice signs of water leaking, call in the restoration experts at SERVPRO to handle cleanup. We have years of experience returning your bathroom, kitchen or other room to its original condition. In fact, our customers often say it feels  "Like it never even happened.” We are proud of the fact that we focus on restoration, using replacement only when necessary.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification IICRC, which sets industry standards, certifies our SERVPRO team. We receive specialized training in a range of services, including microbial remediation, drying techniques, and water damage restoration. We use state-of-the-art air movers and dehumidifiers, and the most advanced cleaning, sanitizing and deodorizing agents.

Understanding the P.A.S.S. Technique with Fire Extinguishers

4/30/2019 (Permalink)

A fire extinguisher is one of the most essential pieces of life-saving equipment in your commercial property. While your fire suppression system is excellent for your overall facility and alarms will ensure the safe evacuation of your employees or tenants, extinguishers provide a direct line of defense and allow for immediate response to manageable fires. However, there is a four-step process known as the P.A.S.S. technique.

1. Pull

The first step is to pull the pin from the extinguisher handle. The removal of this pin will allow the handle to be fully compressed, releasing the compressed air and chemical mixture to extinguish the flames.

2. Aim

A fire extinguisher will typically have a short, flexible, rubber hose attached to the nozzle and extending away from the handle. This will allow you to aim the compressed mixture at the fire. However, be sure to avoid contact with the discharge opening as the CO2 can damage your skin.

3. Squeeze

Squeezing the handle will release the extinguishing agent. Its mixture will come out quickly and somewhat powerfully, so be prepared and keep firm aim on the blaze.

4. Sweep

You will want to use a sweeping motion, focusing the extinguishing mixture on the base of the fire. Continue this process until the fire is out. After the fire is out, watch the are and ensure that there are no remaining embers. It is possible for a fire to reignite, causing more fire damage.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the proper extinguisher technique, you can contact your local fire department or a fire remediation specialist in the East Monroe County Area!

Do You Know What Mold is?

12/3/2018 (Permalink)

What is Mold?

Mold (or mould) is a term used to refer to fungi that grow in the form of multicellular thread-like structures called hyphae. Fungi that exist as single cells are called yeasts. Some molds and yeasts cause disease or food spoilage, others play an important role in biodegradation or in the production of various foods, beverages, antibiotics and enzymes.

Mold is also found in damp building materials where it often appears like stains and comes in a variety of colours. A must smell is an indication of microbial growth even when there is no visible growth. If mold is allowed to grow in homes or offices it can contribute to poor indoor air quality. Some molds such as the Dry Rot Fungus, Serpula lacrymans, are highly destructive. For more details about dry rot fungus read Occurrence and Significance of Dry Rot Fungus, Serpula lacrymans.

Mold growth requires moisture. The sources of moisture could be Washing, cooking, air humidifiers, condensation or leaks from plumbing or from the outside. Poor ventilation contributes to higher humidity levels and leads to condensation, which also allows mold growth.

Molds release small “spores” into the air. So, when mold grows indoors, the number of mold spores and fragments is usually higher indoors than it is outdoors. These spores are small enough that people can actually inhale them deep into the lungs.

Three Common Reasons for House Fires in Your Rochester Home

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

If a fire starts in your home you may have as little as two minutes to escape.

Carelessness in the kitchen can lead to devastating house fires.

Dryers

Dryer vents are becoming a much bigger and more common safety problem. Over time, your dryer vent fills with lint that sneaks by your dryers filter. Fires can occur when the excess lint builds up in the dryer or exhaust duct.

-Clean out the dryer vent regularly.

-Clean the lint filter after EACH load of laundry that is dried.

-Clean underneath and behind your dryer to eliminate any lint that collects.

Disaster Recovery

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of South East Monroe County not only covers all of Monroe County, but is also a part of all four national SERVPRO storm teams. As a storm team we organize and manage efforts in all 50 states if a wide-spread disaster were to strike. During these catastrophic events, storm teams will mobilize in the area bringing a large number of crews, equipment, and resources to customers affected. Each storm team is managed from one office, where the team receives customer information, organizes that information and responds to the customer quickly and professionally. We recruit crews starting with the closest to the affected area and move outward in concentric circles to ensure we are "faster to any size disaster." As a SERVPRO national response team we respond to disasters as large as Hurricane Harvey and Irma to local flooding or freeze events.

Most recently the United States has been hit with a few hurricanes including Harvey in the Houston, TX area and Irma hitting the Florida Keys. Northern California was also hit with severe wildfires. Unfortunately, a lot of people were affected by these natural disasters and these jobs are still being taken care of and will be for a long time to insure the homes are in preloss condition. We are thankful that SERVPRO could be of assistance during these difficult times

Dealing with Storm Damage to your Property

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

Dealing with repairs and insurance companies after severe weather hits your property can be difficult. Homeowners can use the following tips to help tackle the storm damage caused by hard rains, flooding, or storm-related issues.

SAFETY FIRST

If you and your family were away from home when the storm hit, do not return until it has been confirmed safe. Contact a storm damage expert like SERVPRO of South East Monroe County; we’ll help you determine if your home is safe to return to.

INSURANCE

You will need to contact your homeowners’ insurance adjuster as soon as possible. If your neighborhood has sustained widespread damage, find out if any special teams of insurance agents, relief workers, or contractors are coming to the area. Check your policy to find out what actions you need to take or talk to your agent to make sure you are following the proper procedures. Not following these actions correctly could result in a reduced claim. Inspect your property and make a list of all damages; take photographs of all noted damage if at all possible.

RECORDING AND DOCUMENTING

Document your neighbor’s damages, as well; this can prevent the insurance provider from downgrading your claim by saying the damage is from your neglect of maintenance or other unrelated issues by giving them a way to compare. Keep a record of all the communication you have with your insurance provider, and don’t do any unnecessary repair work yourself. Hire a trusted storm damage restoration service provider such as SERVPRO of South East Monroe County to handle any repairs.

BE SCAM FREE

Always check the adjuster’s identification. If you are evacuated, ask for money from your claim upfront. If they agree, you will be given a check for an amount that will be deducted from your final settlement. Some providers will automatically offer a partial payment early on during the process. Review it carefully and decline it if you feel uncomfortable with any part of it. Never be afraid to ask questions and to expect an answer that makes sense or seems fair.

Dealing with a storm's aftermath is stressful, but reacting properly will be an immense help and can prevent problems down the road.

The SERVPRO of South East Monroe County team is ready to help 24/7. Call us for your fire or water damage issues at (585) 641-0040.

Water Saving Tips

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

Every state is experiencing the effects of drought, and saving water is on everyone’s mind these days. We waste a lot of water; our showers are too long, and we are often obsessed with an emerald green lawn. We need to change the way we handle and view water and leave behind the outdated and inefficient water management systems of the past.

Here are some tips that will help you save water this summer. Your water bill will be reduced, and you can save yourself some time into the bargain as well as doing some good for the Earth.

  1. Water your yard in the cool parts of the day. Water evaporates more quickly when it’s hot, so run your irrigation system while it’s most likely to stay with your lawn. Make sure you are not watering your sidewalk or your driveway, too. A drip system works quite well in this respect. Replacing your thirsty lawn with a drought tolerant garden would be a great way to save water, and it won’t have to be mowed every week!
  2. Check for leaky toilets. Put a few drops of food coloring into the tank. If the color shows up in the bowl, your tank is leaking, and could be wasting up to 100 gallons of water a day!
  3. Take shorter showers. Trimming just two minutes off of your showers can save up to 1700 gallons of water a year. One way to do this is to turn off the shower while you shave or soap up. Install water-efficient shower heads, toilets, and faucets for a savings of thousands of gallons per year as well.
  4. Cover the pool. Make sure the water in your pool stays there by covering it when you are not using it. This will prevent water loss by evaporation.
  5. Use a car wash. Washing your car by hand can easily use 100 gallons of water, and takes a lot of time and effort, as well. Commercial car washes average 40 gallons or less!
  6. Trap rain water. Collect the water from summer rain storms by getting a water barrel. You can reuse this water for your garden. Green roofs, rain gardens, and other water-saving techniques are called green infrastructure and go a long way towards saving this most precious resource. More and more landowners and city governments are choosing to invest in these and other innovative strategies as ways to save water, reduce pollution, and save millions, and even billions, in costs for new water tanks, tunnels, and other traditional water infrastructures.

Don't let your Halloween Decor start a Fire

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Stay safe this Halloween!

How to set up your decor safely

Children dressed in costumes excitedly running door to door to trick-or-treat, festive decorations like glowing jack-o-lanterns, paper ghosts and dried cornstalks adorning front porches – these are some of the classic hallmarks of Halloween that make the holiday special for kids and adults alike.

Unfortunately, these Halloween symbols and activities can also present lurking fire risks that have the potential to become truly scary. But by planning ahead, you can help make this Halloween a fire-safe one. Taking simple fire safety precautions like keeping decorations far away from open flames and using battery-operated candles or glow-sticks in jack-o-lanterns can help ensure your holiday remains festive and fun!

Did you know?

  • From 2009-2013, decorations were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 860 reported home structure fires per year.
  • Nearly half of decoration fires in homes occurred because the decorations were too close to a heat source.
  • These fires caused an estimated average of one civilian death, 41 civilian injuries and $13 million in direct property damage per year.
  • Forty-one percent of these incidents were started by candles; one-fifth began in the living room, family room, or den

At one time or another, as a homeowner or renter, we have all had a disaster.  Sometimes it’s an easy clean-up and sometimes we know that we are in over our heads.  Many times though, homeowners have a water damage and with a little elbow grease, a shop vac and some towels they try to mitigate the damage themselves.  Unfortunately, some time later they end up calling the experts for more costly repairs due to damaged materials from improperly drying their home and even mold.  Here are some facts about water damage.

  • It is 1,200 times easier to remove water than to evaporate it? That’s why proper extraction of standing water is key to the dry out of a structure.  Many times shop vacs are unable to do a sufficient job quick enough.
  • Drywall exposed to water can wick up the wall at a rate of one inch per hour for the first 24 hours. If left for a few days while you are out of town it can wick all of the way up the wall to the seam at 4 ft.
  • The insulation in your walls will wick water from the drywall as well. Without proper weep holes drilled to allow air flow you walls may seem dry, but you have insulation still festering with moisture and eventually mold.  Insulation also loses its R-Value (its ability to insulate properly) when it is wet.
  • Improperly dried drywall becomes brittle and weak causing it to break apart very easily. Interestingly it seem that drywall that is dried properly can actually become stronger which was discovered by water restoration companies that used what they call “flood rooms” for training.  Each week the rooms are flooded and used for training proper dry out techniques.  They found after about five “floods” the drywall had to be replaced because it would no longer allow water to wick up the walls.
  • Mold will start growing immediately after spores are attached to an item and it has food and moisture. It can easily grow within 24 to 48 hours and will colonize in 1-12 days.
  • Mold releases its spores when it is disturbed, so without proper removal you can spread it throughout your home trying to get rid of it.

These are just a few reasons you should entrust your water damage to the experts at SERVPRO of South East Monroe County and save yourself the time, money and sanity of having to restore your home more than once despite just one single water damage.

OH NO! Not Mold!

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

The word mold is scary enough, but then... you see it. Does it immediately send chills up your spine? Are you worried about what you can't see? Worried about what type it is? Can it make you sick? There are so many questions and it can be scary.

SERVPRO is professionally trained in mold remediation. We suggest mold testing before and after the remediation process to ensure the air quality is within normal limits. We are proud to say we have over a 99% passing rate.

Now, have you ever thought about how you can prevent mold in the first place?? Well, below is some tips to help.

1. Identify problem areas in your home and correct themyou can't mold-proof your home, but you can make it mold resistant. Check your home regularly. Look for condensation or other wet areas. You may have to end up pulling wet carpet or even repair gutters. Better to pay a little now than a lot later.

2. Dry wet areas immediatelymold cannot grow without moisture. Anything that gets wet should be dried within 24-48 hours.

3. Prevent moisture with proper ventilation check your ventilation systems. Are they working properly? Places like the kitchen, bathroom and laundry room are the high moisture areas.

4. Equip your home with mold-resistant productsif you're building a new home, or renovating, there are mold resistant products like drywall, Sheetrock, or even mold inhibitors for paint.

5. Monitor humidity indoorsthe EPA recommended indoor humidity is between 30 and 60 percent. You can measure the moisture by purchasing a moisture reader form the hardware store. Signs of high humidity is condensation. Be sure to pay attention to window seals, walls and pipes.

6. Direct water away from your home if the ground around your home isn't sufficiently sloped away from the foundation, water may collect there and seep into your crawlspace or basement.

Does your Rochester Home have a Mold Problem?

9/12/2018 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Facts about Flooding in the Rochester Area

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is a potential for suffering from flood damage.

Just because you haven't experienced  a  flood  in  the past,  doesn’t  mean  you  won't  in  the future.  In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities. On average, floods cost $3 billion in annual losses in the United States. Commercial flood claims average more than $75,000.

According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster.  The ARC offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing scream where water is above your ankles, stop, rum around and go another Six inches of swiftly moving water can  sweep you  off of your feet.
  • If you approach  a flooded  road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road  and waters are rising rapidly around  you,  get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about run ning water or contaminated water. Keep your pets out of the water too.

If a flood does strike your home or business, contact SERVPRO® of South East Monroe County. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a  structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. The SERVPRO® System is prepared to handle any sized disaster. The sooner work begins, the sooner order can be restored.

When fire and water take control of your life, SERVPRO® of South East Monroe County will help you take it back.

What you can do to Help Prevent Damage During a Hurricane

9/11/2018 (Permalink)

June is the start of Hurricane Season. Hurricane's are defined as an intense tropical weather system of strong thunderstorms with a well-defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 74 MPH or higher. You can see a storm coming by the change in color of the sky (often greenish), large hail, low-flying clouds and a roar like a freight train.

Below are some helpful hints to follow whether you own a home, RV, boat, car or all of them!

  • It is best to have a plan in place regarding where you are going to go when a hurricane hits. While they may be intriguing to watch, the best place is NOT outside. Your basement or under a set of stairs are great places to wait out the storm. If this is not available, the bottom floor of any building will work.
  • Keep your car indoors if possible. Tape up the windows and door with tarps and keep away from any objects that could damage the car if they were to fall on top of it.
  • During an emergency, gas stations will often be closed, so always make sure you have at least half a tank of gas to get away instantly
  • Have enough supplies on hand to wait out 72 hours, just in case help cannot arrive right away. These supplies can also be stored in the trunk (items like a first aid kit, bottled water, non-perishable foods, and medication can stay there at all times.)
  • Make sure your car is in proper shape. Have a full tank of gas, wiper blades and tires are ready to go.
  • Make sure your cell phone is charged and keep your charger with you.
  • Avoid driving in deep waters
  • For your boat, remove non-secure items, electronics, excess gear, valuable, and important documents.
  • Make sure all openings are clear of debris
  • Double all lines that are securing your boat to its securing space
  • With your RV, do not drive it during the storm as it is more vulnerable to higher/stronger winds
  • Make sure you have a full tank of gas, but empty holding tanks, turn off propane cylinders and cover the regulator.
  • Make sure all documents are in a waterproof bag and with you at all times

Life can be unpredictable, but having plans in place help you with whatever may come. For more information, please check out these hurricane tips. As always, once the storm passes, contact your SERVPRO of South East Monroe County at 585-641-0040 to help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Flood Damage and SERVPRO

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Say the words flood damage and people rightly think of foot deep water in their basement or entire neighborhoods underwater. This time of year, it can be a common, even multiple occurrences in some parts of New York.

SERVPRO is an expert in reducing the obvious flood damage to Rochester homes. What surprises our clients are just how many ways a flood can destroy a home even after the water has been removed. Here are the most common ways your home can be dry as a bone and still be unlivable.
Odor - This may seem like a minor thing, but some folks can be allergic to just the smell. If you don't get rid of it, you won't be able to live in your home, and you certainly won't be able to sell it. The smell is also indicative of a worse problem.

Mold and Mildew - If not found and immediately treated and removed, mold and mildew will cause respiratory problems that will drive you out of the house. It is particularly dangerous to people with asthma. If the mold and mildew get into sheetrock and cannot be destroyed by industrial cleaners, then walls will have to be replaced.

Electrical System - If flooding reached high enough to reach electrical outlets, then those have to be inspected by our SERVPRO professionals and possibly be replaced before the power can be turned back on. If they have been compromised, then there is the possibility of a fire hazard when the lights are turned back on.
Plumbing and Sewage - Flooding can overwhelm and damage a home's plumbing system. If it stays under water too long, there is also the possibility that raw sewage can flow backward into your home through the toilets. Septic tanks can also be compromised in the same manner. The cleaning process now becomes much more extensive.

Bacterial Contamination - If sewage gets into your home, this also brings the threat of bacteria which can cause more respiratory problems and other health concerns such as having your kidneys and intestinal (digestive) systems compromised as well.

Locally Owned Company with National Resources

Flood water in a home is a dangerous threat and needs to be removed quickly. SERVPRO of South-East Monroe County understands that this is only the first step. Other hazards have to be addressed before you are safe again in your own home. To begin the process or if you want to schedule an inspection to help prevent problems in the future, call us today at 585-641-0040

Mold Damage at your Rochester NY Property

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

Mold spores are microscopic and can be located everywhere. There are thousands in every home and are dormant, causing no problems, for the most part. It takes an open source of water or high levels of moisture in the air to cause these spores to expand and grow. If untreated or removed, mold can quickly destroy building material and other property, costing hundreds (even thousands) of dollars in damage.

If you are concerned there may be mold damage in your North Dallas home, call a professional mold damage restoration company for assistance. SERVPRO has extensive training in handling mold and cleaning up property that has been infested by it.

We start by finding the source of the mold and determining just how far it may have already grown. Our technicians use air testers to determine the exact levels which help us plan how to neutralize and remove it. Once we find it, the next step is to isolate the affected room or area. Our response team seals off all entrances and exits using plastic sheeting and duct tape to prevent further contamination of your home. The vents and ducts of your heating and air system will be sealed off as well.

Next, technicians begin to clean the area using anti-fungal and anti-microbial sprays to destroy active spores. Every surface will be sprayed and then wiped down; if the growth is exceptionally thick in some places, we use special scrubbing tools to remove it without damaging the surface underneath. Areas difficult to reach may be cleaned by using anti-fungal foggers that get into every surface and crack mold may hide. These foggers are also used in case your heating and air system has been compromised by the mold. After the ducts have been exposed to the anti-fungal agents, technicians will use specially designed exhaust fans to blow the spores out of your home. When this is finished, we wipe down all of the vents and replace the air filters.

To prevent new mold growth, our technicians also test the air to see if the air moisture levels need to be reduced. If they do, dehumidifiers will be set up at key points to draw water from the air. Once the levels test out to under 12 percent, your home is considered to be safe against new growth. If you are worried about mold in your house, call us at (585) 641-0040 today to schedule an inspection. SERVPRO of South-East Monroe County is here to help restore your home and put your life back together.

Commercial Flood Damage at a Rochester Retail Store

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

After a disaster strike, the aftermath is what causes the destruction most often. A thunderstorm or tornado can damage a roof, but it is the accompanying water that can ruin a local business.

Flood damage to Rochester commercial properties can be a costly, temporary, problem or it can shut doors permanently. SERVPRO has the expertise and personnel to make sure the latter does not happen. We have a 24-hour response team with the latest equipment in restoration. A rapid response is particularly important for businesses such as furniture stores. The variety of types of wood, cloth, and varnishes mean that more than one method of drying is necessary.

The first step is to get the furniture out of the water. Even just an inch can cause the varnish to separate from wood surfaces and color to bleed from covering fabrics, carpets, and drapes. Our technicians use industrial-grade pumps that can remove water from even a large, warehouse-sized, structure in a matter of hours.

Next, all items can be either removed to a dry location or placed up on blocks or pallets to lift them out of water trapped in carpets or flooring. Area rugs, curtains, and drapes can be removed and hung. They can be transferred to our facility if needed. With everything out of the way, the response team uses extractors to pull water out of carpets and flooring.

The drying process must be applied to the structure itself and everything inside. In a large facility, our response team can set up a series of air movers and exhaust fans inside the structure and at exits and entrances. These machines pull the damp air out of the building and replace it with dry air from the outside. For smaller rooms (offices, exclusive showrooms) inside, we place dehumidifiers inside to draw moisture out of the air.

Drying furniture requires a dry atmosphere, but if the varnish has already absorbed water, then an even heat may be needed to help dry it while not causing damage from the heat itself. To end up with a smooth finish, we can use a series of space heaters placed around a group of items with similar woods and coatings. Technicians try to avoid applying direct heat as this can cause bubbles to form underneath the surface.

The drying and restoration process may be time-consuming, but it can help you keep the doors open. Call us today at (585) 641-0040 to get started. SERVPRO of South-East Monroe County is here to help you put your livelihood back together.

Experiencing Commercial Water Damage

9/10/2018 (Permalink)

We know that your main concern is getting your business operations back to normal as soon as possible after any catastrophe, but commercial water damage is much more complex than most problems experienced by businesses today. Categories of water can quickly change from non-hazardous to very dangerous quickly. Water can spread in almost any direction, including up if conditions are right, and remaining flood waters can instantaneously ruin some certain products with even minute amounts.

Commercial water damage presents unique challenges because of the environment involved. From warehouses storing agricultural products to leather processing plants, inventory protection, and worker safety is both important to any business. Different types of water can cause damage, and even the cleanest water, category 1, can turn into the worst, category 3 when contaminants are present. These can happen when clean water is mixed or combined with another source of category 3 water, even if it is not causing any damage by itself (such as sewer water) or when bags of previously dry substances such as fertilizers or pesticides become saturated, and their contents leach into the water.

The damage to your inventory can also rapidly multiply. When products at the bottom of a stack can be a conduit for water by wicking it upwards toward other product that has not been damaged, it's common sense to get those products on top removed to a safer location. We have team members who can provide this service while our technicians work in other areas, protecting your business from increased inventory loss.

Stacked bags of concrete and other dry products that are designed to be mixed with water, oil, or other liquid just prior to use may seem to be in saleable condition until they are examined on their undersides where water has accumulated. These ruined items need to be removed and accounted for on inventory loss sheets. For insurance purposes, all products need to be re-inventoried and noted as to their condition before the conclusion of our restoration work.

After you've made the initial call to us, we can begin the restoration process. Returning your business to normal operations is important, and we understand the complexities involved in keeping your employees safe while protecting your business's bottom line. Call us, SERVPRO of South-East Monroe County at (585) 641-0040 any time, day or night, 365 days a year.

Severe Flooding Tips

4/13/2018 (Permalink)

Since SERVPRO supports the American Red Cross we love sharing their tips when it comes to flooding occasions.

Check out www.redcross.org for more information!

FLOODING Heavy rains could fill rivers and streams, bringing flooding to the area. If your neighborhood is threatened with the possibility of flooding, here are some things you should do:

1. Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued for your area, head for higher ground and stay there.

2.Stay away from floodwaters.

3. If you come upon a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.

4. Keep children out of the water.

5. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood danger.

DOWNLOAD EMERGENCY People should download the free Red Cross Emergency App to receive emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of tornadoes, flooding and other disasters, as well as locations of shelters. The App also includes emergency first aid information and a Family Safe feature which allows people to instantly see if loved ones are okay. The free Emergency App is available in app stores by searching for the American Red Cross or going to redcross.org/apps.

Space Heater Safety Tips

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

9 Do's When it Comes to Space Heaters

1) Keep the heater at least 3 feet away from combustible materials, including beds, sofas, curtains, papers, clothes, etc.

2) Make sure the heaters power cord is not damaged or frayed in any way.

3) Make sure the heater is securely plugged into the power outlet. Ensure it does not come loose or fall out.

4) Ensure your heater is on a stable and level surface with minimal risk of it getting knocked over.

5) Make sure your space heater has been certified as safe to use. You should see a safety logo on the back somewhere.

6) Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly.

7) Ensure your unit is turned off when you go to sleep, in a different room, or unable to keep an eye on it.

8) It is wise to teach everyone in your household how to properly operate your heater.

9) If your space heater requires fuel, make sure you refill it with the right kind... or you will most likely cause a fire.

Fire Damage in Rochester

12/1/2017 (Permalink)

An unknown electrical issue caused the fire damage in this house in Rochester.  The fire luckily happened while the homeowner was not home.

This photo was taken in the kitchen and although it looks as if the fire may have  started here, it actually started in the family room next to the kitchen.  The fire damage was so severe, there was very little able to be salvaged from the affected rooms in the home.  The most salvageable items will be found in the basement , since smoke rises and the 2nd floor was heavily affected as well.

SERVPRO of South East Monroe County was called in to save everything we possibly could for this customer.  And they were very happy to know there is a company like ours that can save some of her sentimental items and not all is lost in a disaster like this.

Continuing Education Class 11/1/17

11/21/2017 (Permalink)

Our second continuing education class of the year was a huge success.  The event was held at the City Grill in downtown Rochester, and was attended by 70 insurance agents. As always, Mike Necci (owner and licensed NYS instructor) gave a phenomenal presentation for both sessions of our class with amazing reviews once again.

Our first session (9am-12pm) featured the topic "Understanding Mold and the Remediation Process".  After the first session, we served lunch and refreshments for all of our agents to enjoy. The second session (1pm-3pm) featured the topic "Hoarding Challenges", which was a huge hit with the agents. November 1st was a interesting and informative day for all, and we are looking forward to planning our continuing education class in the Spring.

Fire Damage in Rochester NY

11/9/2017 (Permalink)

An unknown electrical issue caused the fire damage in this house in Rochester.  The fire happened luckily while the homeowner was not home.

This photo is from the kitchen and although it looks as if the fire may have  started in this room due to the damage, it actually started in the family room next to the kitchen.  The fire damage is so severe, there is very little able to be salvaged from this home.  The only salvageable items will be from the basement below, since smoke rises and the 2nd floor was heavily affected as well.

SERVPRO of South East Monroe County was called in to see if there is anything we could possibly salvage for this customer.  And they were very happy to know there is a company like ours that can save some of her sentimental items and not all is lost.

FEMA Tips for Flood Preparation

11/3/2017 (Permalink)

Before the Flood:

  • Have a qualified professional elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel if susceptible to flooding.
  • Install "check valves" in sewer traps to prevent flood water from backing up into the drain of your home or business
  • Seal walls in basements with waterproofing compounds to help avoid seepage.

During the Flood:

  • Turn off utilities at the main switches or valves if instructed to do so.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances.
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Do not walk through moving water. Even six inches of water can make you fall.

After the Flood:

  • Listen for news reports to learn if the community's water supply is safe to drink.
  • Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline, or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Return home only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Floods Strike Everywhere

11/3/2017 (Permalink)

On Average, floods coast $6 billion in annual losses in the United States.  The following are a few more little-known facts:

  • Floods kill an average of 140 people per year in the United States, making flooding the most deadly natural disaster.
  • More than half of all fatalities during floods are auto related, often the result of drivers misjudging the depth of water on a road and being swept away in a swiftly moving current.
  • The principle cause of floods in the eastern United States are hurricanes and storms.
  • The principle cause of floods in the western United States are snow-melt and rainstorms.
  • Underpasses can be some of the most dangerous places during a flash flood - especially at night, when it's difficult to see.

There are some simple steps you can take until help arrives:

  • If the water is coming from a burst or leaking pipe, turn off the water at its source.
  • If the water is coming through the roof or broken window, try to cover them to prevent further damage.
  • Move wet items to drier areas.
  • Place aluminum foil coasters or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Save damaged items and any parts you may need to replace - your claim representative may want to inspect them.
  • Do not use electrical equipment or appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors.

Mold Remediation

10/31/2017 (Permalink)

Be an Informed Resource

Molds are found in every environment, and mold spores reproduce rapidly when moisture is present. An Institute of Medicine study found excess dampness indoors encourages the growth of molds and other organisms, causing a public health problem. The EPA advised that the potential health concerns from molds are an important reason to prevent moisture problems leading to mold growth. It is especially important to clean up existing indoor mold growth to increase property appeal and retain its value. If a property has experienced a water intrusion, SERVPRO of South East Monroe County can inspect the damage to see whether moisture has penetrated materials or is allowing mold growth.

Control Moisture, Reduce Mold

  • Correct any water leaks or standing water.
  • Remove standing water under cooling coils or air handling units.
  • Properly maintain humidifiers, if used.
  • Replace wet or visibly moldy insulation materials.
  • Steam cleaning and other methods involving moisture should not be used on any kind of duct work.
  • Install a ventilation system.

Different Types of Mold

9/12/2017 (Permalink)

From the Ordinary

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods, and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. The unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum). Even though some forms of mold can pass value to our lives, other forms of mold can be harmful.  Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

To the Unhealthy

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusion can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall, and insulation, provide a food source for mold to flourish. Excessive mold growth can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health hazard.

Commercial Large Loss

9/7/2017 (Permalink)

A water main break caused this commercial building to have a major flood.  This affected their store, kitchen,  cafeteria, and a few offices.  The water and dirt brought in from outside left a lot of damage to their business.

SERVPRO of S.E. Monroe County was called on to help clean up the mess.  And the business owners were very glad they were able to save their merchandise from any further damage.  They could not believe we were able to respond so quickly and with a large amount of drying equipment.

This photo shows two before photos and two after photos.  In the before photos, the carpet is not supposed to be brown... that is mud!

SERVPRO of S.E. Monroe County was able to make it "Like it never even happened" and they were fully operational within the same week.

Understanding Mold

9/7/2017 (Permalink)

Confusion and misunderstanding surround the topic of mold and mold remediation. Some restoration businesses even make claims to remove all mold from a building.  This is a fallacy.  Mold spores occur naturally almost everywhere, both indoors and outdoors.  These microscopic spores float along in the air and can enter a home or business through windows and HVAC systems. Consider these facts:

What To Do Before A Storm Hits!

9/5/2017 (Permalink)

BEFORE THE STORM

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan

  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.

  • Postpone outdoor activities.

  • Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.

  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.

  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.

  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.

  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives
